THE UNIVERSITY OF ST ANDREWS

John Burnet Hall & Kilmallie Wing

External Building fabric repairs and redecoration project

Following a competitive tender bid, we were delighted to be appointed to carry out external building fabric repairs and redecoration works at John Burnet Hall and Kilmallie Wing on behalf of the University of St Andrews. The building is a 3-storey student accommodation located within the Links Crescent conservation area in St Andrews. The building is flat roofed with slated mansard pitched sections and is traditionally constructed with stone external walls, timber sash and casement windows, timber solid core doors and frames and cast-iron rainwater goods.

Given the limited timeframe to carry out the works during the summer break, much of the works had to be undertaken from a cherry picker. The rear elevation and internal gables were fully scaffolded over some fragile roofs. This was due to the rear elevation being fully landlocked. All painting had to be undertaken in accordance with the University specification.

The external fabric repair works included the following:

  • Preparing and painting of all cast iron rainwater goods;
  • Stone re-pointing to the external walling;
  • Repairs to decayed timber framed windows;
  • Replacement of the perimeter sand mastic to windows.
  • Preparation and painting of all exterior joinery including doors and windows.

Our client was delighted with our project management and the finished product.

I worked with Cosmos on the internal and external refurbishment of a Grade ‘B’ listed townhouse in Glasgow city centre. The work included extensive internal improvements to services and finishes to provide speculative office space for let. We collaborated with Cosmos following a competitive tender process and value engineered the project scope and specification in line with our client’s budget requirements.
